Whittling away at a concept
During this period, I took on a few independently published projects. I’ve mentioned I don’t really take them anymore. They had advantages, but they had definite and unique disadvantages. In this case, the author reached out and we spent a little time back-and-forthing on details and rights and pricing and such, and agreed to move forward. I had the opportunity of reading the manuscript this time and generally enjoyed the sort of historical fiction, high seas-action, with a minor note of romance. I took copious notes and went to work designing some studies.
Around this time I had a trip to Rotterdam, Netherlands, for a Magic event. While there I ran across some kind of maritime museum, so I went in and did some sketches and took photos of rigging and such for period vessels, which was a lot of help.
