In the summer of 1995, my first Magic set just having released, I flew out to GenCon when it was in Milwaukee to show my work around and try to get more work. It was the same show that Legend of the Five Rings debuted at. I was getting going, but hungry for more. As mentioned, this was right in the middle of every company making me-too card games, most of which wouldn’t last beyond an initial release.

I hit up a couple of companies while there are picked up some other projects. Apart from L5R, which did alright, Black Dragon Press was another of those companies putting out product which wouldn’t last. They were demoing their upcoming game, Tempest of the Gods. I had worked on these pieces right before the first L5R set, so I got to see some of them there. That release contained art by a few other early Magic artists like Mark Poole, Douglas Shuler, Bradley Williams, and a couple others.
