Bullseye (2017)
One of the more obscure projects
For a few years in the late ‘00’s, I had an informal relationship with the illustration agency Good Illustration, in the UK. By informal, I mean that I didn’t have a contract with them or an explicit agreement. But they’d pop up and offer me projects from time to time and were great to work with. If they found me work, great, if they didn’t, I didn’t have an obligation to them either. It worked out great. Being an informal relationship also meant I wasn’t, “On the books,” so to speak. Which meant that when we both went awhile without contacting the other, we lost touch until at some point we didn’t have even an informal relationship any longer!
One client they had I worked with a few times. They were an educational company (Six Red Marbles, if you’re really interested) that produced these graded readers for educational use. These were short stories with cover and interior color illustrations. Mini children’s books, really. Their niche market meant that they didn’t have a great budget. On the other hand, I was able to use these projects as experiments on my end, trying things I wouldn’t try in other venues, since I was confident they wouldn’t be seen or kept or remembered much. As of 2025, no one has ever brought any up to me, so no one has found them in the wild, noticed my name, and brought them up to me.
