Cortical Stimulators (1996)
Inevitable technology
When we worked on the Netrunner card game in the mid 90s, it was a naive form of cyberpunk, taking cues from the sci-fi literature very popular at the time. Those books would go on to inspire The Matrix and other films, but these books, at least the few I read, were more about technological concepts and narrative, but not very visual. As such, games like Netrunner were building up the visual lexicon from a pretty new place, and much of it doesn’t hold up.
Cortical Stimulators was one of my favorites of the pieces I did for the game. It was going to by necessity include some, well, kind of gross brain matter. Nothing to be done about it, so just embrace it, I guess.
