They can’t all be painted

I read tons of Dragon Magazine back when I played D&D in high school. By the time I got to contribute to the magazine, it had ceased being a paper publication and moved to online only, which was sad.

Issue 361 features an article, “The Ecology of the Fire Archon,” featuring a few spot illustrations of the Archons, the most mundane of which is their Forge, which features here.

When I can, even if I’m going to render a digital finish, I like to start with an actual pencil sketch that I scan and continue working on digitally. I’ve occasionally done the drawing digitally, and sometimes have had to, but it’s still the case that I just don’t like the feel of drawing on a screen. I don’t like the feel of painting on a screen, either, but drawing feels much worse.
