Flight of the Bats (2006)
Trying something new
In the mid 00’s I had the idea that I might want to try to move into comics work. I did not think that penciling would be up my alley, my skillset was not right for it—including the sheer speed required! But perhaps some cover work could be acquired. So, I endeavored to begin putting together a portfolio between assignments, because I definitely understood that anything else I’d done would be viewed as irrelevant, and certainly the publishers would want to see that I could work with their characters.
The first decision I had to make was Marvel vs. DC. I figured that each publisher would want to see an active interest in their characters, even if an overall ability to do comic characters was shown. I honestly don’t have favorites here. Most of my comics exposure was in my youth, and I’ve only occasionally read comics or graphic novels in the years since. For instance, I only read The Killing Joke by about 2021 or s o. I enjoy many of the films but have not been hardcore into comics. Of course I knew that if I was going to try to involve myself in the industry, it’d require that I get current again eventually. What a sacrifice!
