Jorougumo (2017)
Arachnophobes beware
3D Total is a publisher that has put out a wide array of books featuring a variety of how-tos for aspiring artists, mostly in the fantasy and video game publishing vein. I contributed to two in this period, one just reprinted a collection of drawings done for various projects, of the kind I regularly post here. The other commissioned a number of artists to each go about designing a mythical beast.
The goal was to show extensive process, including a number of variations and poses. Rough versions, detailed versions. They included some turnaround images, as I might do for a minature figure. Finally, one more finished piece featuring the creature. Mine was the Jorougumo, a sort of mystical creature of Japanese folklore. For western audiences, consider it something like a centaur, but with spider body versus horse.

The number of drawings was fairly extensive, and these began with pose, shape and other variations. This one ended up a combination of two roughs I produced.
