All the world’s a stage
Composition is one of the most interesting topics in illustration. Choosing a camera angle, choosing the internal angles of objects, light and shadow, these things can be arranged nearly infinitely, and the choices you make can create a palette of sorts that defines your work.
Over time, one of the forms of composition I gravitated towards, as a viewer, has been the, “Performance Stage,” setup. Clear separation between foreground and background, characters in the front, camera essentially straight-on at a standard height within the scene. It looks a little like a character standing on a set, with a background behind, and you in the audience, sitting at about the character’s eye-level. To describe it, it sounds a little boring, and frequently these compositions do pale in dynamism compared to bolder approaches.
