MTG: Baleful Stare (2004)
The Sisters
When given my two assignments for Magic’s 9th Edition in late July of 2004, I thought it was clever that they gave me two pieces that were similar in nature: Baleful Stare and Withering Gaze. They had both been done previously by different artists to different ends. Almost instantly I knew I had to make the two pieces similar in certain ways, and I now call the two paintings by the nickname, “The Sisters.”
The cards needed to each show a blue-aligned spell affecting red (mountain) in the case of Stare, and green (forest) in the case of Gaze. I decided a circle would be my tool for showing the effects, and for creating similar compositions. The circle would frame the figure in each piece in blue, and everything within would be tinted cool. In the case of Gaze, where the rocks/cliffs are touched by the apparently expanding blue aura, the rock disintegrates. In the case of stare, the plants wither.
