Unglued, the first of a set of joke sets for Magic: the Gathering, full of in-game and real world puns and other nonsense, had a second set that I worked on in 1999 before the entire set got canned, one of the few sets to get as far as commissioning art before being abandoned. Maybe the only one?

In the years since, Wizards of the Coast has talked a bit about it and shared some in-development cards and art, which allows me to do so as well (otherwise, these might’ve been forever buried under NDAs).

8X10” oil on panel, the painting was destroyed or painted over and I don’t have a source scan!

One of the things about these sets is they often feature real-world characters, settings and objects. In that way, one might of think of them as early precursors for what the licensed Universes Beyond sets would offer the game.
