Though I don’t post here chronologically, I’ve referenced many eras of process. It’s actually a little surprising to me, as well, to consider all the ways I’ve changed things up over the years. I know some painters whose end-of-life methods seemed exactly the same as how they started. I kind of envy them. At the same time, I’ve made it a point to consider alternate techniques and methods, so it’s not a path that could ever have been mine.

Leonin Bladetrap was the first painting completed in early January 2003. I had only in the last couple of months begun doing quite detailed preliminary studies, scanning them, printing them on heavy watercolor or other paper, then gluing that paper down to board. This allowed me all the detail of a more considered rendering, without losing the drawing under paint (which was what the prior couple of years had been about). I think I did it once two years prior but for whatever reason I didn’t make it the normal method at that time.
