MTG: Maw of the Obzedat (2012)
Something for everyone!
Every once in awhile, you get asked to do something really outside your zone. Like, completely outside. So it was with this illustration, the description of which read much as it appeared. Art Director Jeremy Jarvis sometimes made very surprising choices like this. I think he sometimes wanted to do this, on purpose, for the sake of throwing a curveball rather than playing it safe with each artist’s preferences. Of course, in any given set, it could also be as simple as filling out a spreadsheet of hundreds of assignments, seeing a couple of pieces left, and having to just assign it out to someone. Not sure in this case.
I didn’t relish it, but just walked forward to accomplish this mix of comical and horrific. This...thing, has set itself up with a feeding trough...staircase, upon which supplicants willingly line up to be consumed. It’s not a piece I show around much—sometimes you do assignments and it’ll live in the product, but there isn’t much motivation to do show-and-tell on my own. A job’s a job, in this case.
