MTG: Mazemind Tome (schematic version, 2021)
Retconning a previous illustration
When earlier in 2021 I was asked to re-illustrate Karplusan Forest, for the first time in my Magic career, it was an enjoyable novelty. So imagine my surprise when after not very long, art director Sarah Wassell reached out to me about re-illustrating Mazemind Tome, which I painted in 2019. Just over 2 years later, I was going to revisit this piece.
Wizards had at the time been reprinting some older cards, often artifacts, in a sort of “schematic” format. The idea is that at center is a sort of “tracing” of the original artifact, and it is meant to look like some sort of document detailing the workings of the item. Perhaps a sketched concept from the magician’s personal notebook. There should be vignettes highlighting aspects of the workings of the artifact, perhaps some magical runes or text. Think Leonardo DaVinci’s notebooks. That sort of thing.
