Floating along, and then….

While it was the case that I made the switch to oils the year before, largely, and was sort of recalibrating my workflow, 1999 was a rough year for me. I turned 25 that year, and if what they say is true, that our prefrontal cortex largely stabilzes in its development around that time, it happens to line up well. It was around that time that I think I started reflecting on the first 5 years of my career. Of course back then, five years felt like a long time, and by the end of that year I had done about 275 illustrations.

I took me until 2012 to do the next 275.

I suppose that while I had floated along through then, I was about to crash out, as I came to terms with the choices I had made as an artist. Many of them were impulsive and unwise and were not moving me in the direction I wanted my career and art to go, ultimately. And those choices were catching up to me I think. Nightwing Glider was done earlier in the year but by late 1999 I was flailing a bit.
