MTG: Song of Totentanz (2022)
A song you can play
This contribution to Magic’s Wilds of Eldraine set focuses on a melody, played by Eldraine’s version of the Pied Piper: Totentanz, Swarm Piper. As such, this was not a portrayal of an artifact, nor of Totentanz himself, already brilliantly illustrated by Matt Stewart. I was to explicitly reference Matt’s illustration and focus on the melody he’s playing.

I was to illustrate a red, wispy magic emanating from the bell of the flute, suggestive of notes or music of some kind. That was a little vague or abstract, so I decided to make it a little more literal. I asked whether it would be possible to have the magic actually suggest notation in a readable way, and after some conversation it was decided that this would be allowable. Of course, whatever music indicated would have to be original, and Wizards would own the copyright to it as well as the illustration.
