MTG: Surge of Thoughtweft (2007)
Work as travelogue

I discussed previously how Fire-Belly Changeling was begun in Frigiliana, Spain, and completed in Austin, TX. A short time later, we moved for most of 2007 to Asheville NC. Landing in Asheville NC, I finished up work I was also doing on some Dungeons and Dragons art at the same time as this project, and got to work on completing the Lorwyn assignment. But before that, there was a stopover back in my hometown of San Jose.
So, a project in four cities, a first for me:
Fire-Belly Changeling drawing: Frigiliana, Spain
Consuming Bonfire thumbnails: Frigiliana, Spain
Fire-Belly Changeling painting: Austin, TX
Consuming Bonfire drawing: Austin, TX
Consuming Bonfire painting: Austin & San Jose, CA
Surge of Thoughtweft drawing: San Jose
Surge of Thoughtweft painting: Asheville
I only know these location details because I have long been in the habit of indicating the location when away from home. I’m from San Jose originally, but strictly speaking I didn’t really have a home in this period as I was just staying with family for a bit.
You can see in the drawing that I did not have the Thoughtweft effect in yet, and I don’t think it had been established definitively. There is an arc from the lead Kithkin that wraps to the others, and I initially saw it as a band of light binding them. By the time I submitted the initial study, I had changed it.
In the first study, I had the Thoughts indicated as a glowing script emanating off their heads. I recall having it explained better to me, and then redesigning it as these rainbow-colored halos around each. I also took the opportunity of redoing the study to shape the clouds better to have more value variation, as the background in the initial study was a little monotonous, even if it would’ve had the same colors as were used. It was a notable improvement.
