My work for Every Day Original was usually some small personal piece or study, in an era where I was more actively engaged with that side of my art. The thing with personal pieces is that they are, like illustration, often ephemeral. By this I mean that most illustration serves its best purpose when a product is released and over time that importance can wane and wane further in the instance when the art is replaced on a product later, for instance. Some illustration work attains a classic status even if it’s not in use, and some illustrators attain a status that bestows their body of work with importance, even once the original use of the illustration has passed.

Personal works are different in that they are not as subject to trends or the sometimes highly particular needs of a client. They can therefore be more timeless, and this is a motivation to want to paint them. However, their importance to the artist changes as well, if not brought forth and actually being made to exist outside of the artist’s mind.
