Red Onion (2018)
Considering the area
In this period, I settled on 6x8” for most of my still life paintings. There were some larger, some smaller, but 6x8” worked best in terms of schedule. Since I have most enjoyed working on these pieces alla prima, or all at once while wet, this size most easily allowed it. 8X10” is also possible, and I’ve done some at that size as well, but the extra real estate which is more than half again of a 6x8” makes it more difficult to do in that manner, at the level of detail I’m usually after.
Since one of the other things I enjoy doing is painting at apparently actual size, 6x8” allows for a little greater variety than even 5x7”, when you consider the difference between 35 and 48 square inches. So, a red onion in this case.
