Starship Traveller (2000)
Transitional samples
Where my first few years out the gate were characterized by a flurry of activity and opportunities and a mix of a few great shots taken...and a number that went pretty wide past the goal, the turn of the millennium for me was one of a lot of transition, maybe for three years from 1999-2001 I was a little lost in the wilderness and had to find a new way forward.
One thing I did was do a few uncommissioned pieces to spread my wings a bit. When doing so I reached back to the Fighting Fantasy series of game books that I collected and that occupied much of my mental space from ages 10-13. The covers of their initial releases by Richard Corben in particular, as well as Richard Courtney, were quite influential to me, as well as the interior ink illustrations—particularly those of a young and already briliant Iain McCaig.
So I used them as inspiration for a few pieces, to see if any might shake something up or prove to be useful additions to my portfolio.
Of the original white-cover books released, this was my least favorite one, and also the hardest to find. But, Sci-fi visuals were becoming less common and so I was eager to explore in that direction.
