Another kind of repurpose
As mentioned previously, I was playing World of Warcraft most of the years that I illustrated for the card game, and this was helpful and sometimes not. It was helpful in that I could get incorporate in-world textures or palettes as needed, could see characters if they were named, and so on. But overall, working in the aesthetic of the world was tough, trying to tease apart what was intentional versus low-polygon compromise, for instance.
There was usually a step where I’d work with the Art Director to hone in on anatomical exaggerations—what should be pushed, what should not. Environments were never an issue, but figures usually were. The figure study here is a good comparison.
