The early 10s brought a number of commissions from Japanese video game companies who were creating mobile games that were a hybrid of a couple of things, but included digital, “Cards,” which reflected various characters and such. These were usually known as gacha type games, referring to the random capsule toy machines you don’t see so much in the states anymore, but which have enjoyed a long history in Japan.

Often, the nature of the mobile platform allowed for some extra visual treats, effects could be added over the illustrations, and the characters (and the cards they represent) can be leveled-up, so that the character gets bigger, more powerful or whatever. So, often we had to create variants of the original illustration, sometimes culminating in a final form version or whatever, often a unique illustration. Victoriesse was another of these.
